1. First Inauguration 1789- George Washington’s inauguration was held on the Balcony of Federal Hall in New York City.
2. First Traditional Ball 1809- James Madison’s ball took place at Long’s Hotel, where tickets were $4.
3. First Outdoor Speech 1817- James Monroe was the first President to take the oath of office and deliver the Inaugural address outdoors.
4. First Ball Cancelled 1853- Franklin Pierce cancelled his ball after the death of his son.
5. First Photographs 1857- James Buchanan had the first inauguration to be photographed.
6. First African Americans 1865- Abraham Lincoln, African Americans participated in the Inaugural Parade for the first time.
7. First Women 1917- Woodrow Wilson’s parade was the first to include women.
8. First Television Broadcast 1949- Harry Truman’s inauguration was the first to be broadcast on TV.
9. First Internet Broadcast 1997- William Clinton had the first live Internet broadcast.
10. First African American President 2009- Barack Obama is the first president of color, where all people were welcome.
