MEET BO, THE FIRST DOG

Its official, we now have a First Dog!  Senator Ted Kennedy has donated a six-month-old Portuguese water dog that Sasha and Malia have named Bo.  The girls chose the dogs name as a tribute to Michelle’s father who was nicknamed Diddley, a reference to the singer Bo Diddley.

So now that the top-secret dog search is over and President Obama has fulfilled his campaign promise to the girls, are the Obama’s looking better than ever in the White House?

FIRST LADY AND GRANNY GRACE ESSENCE

It’s another cover for the First Family! Both Michelle and her mom, Marian Robinson, are featured on Essence magazine’s Mothers Day cover.   It’s a good look for the magazine and a great look for Black mother/daughter relationships in America.

While Michelle says she wouldn’t be able to do half of the things she does if her mom weren’t around to help with the girls, Sasha and Malia, it’s her mother’s comments about the First Lady that touch a soft spot.  On her daughter, Mrs. Robinson states, “Michelle has always been Michelle. And she has always accomplished whatever it was she set out to accomplish, I have always looked up to Michelle because she has been able to do things that I couldn’t do emotionally, psychologically or physically. I think she is amazing.”

It’s not only good to see a positive relationship between a mother and daughter; it’s also good to see the possibilities of what a family who works together can achieve.  Their relationship is a great example for Black families who may be struggling and have lost sight of dreams coming true if they keep at it.

Marian and Michelle’s relationship is another strong Black symbol and its impact could spill over into Black families everywhere.

What do you think?  Do these two make you want to have a better relationship with your family?  Tell us here.

FROM HOUSE TO WHITE HOUSE

Kal Penn (House, Harold & Kumar) had to have been pacing his home one night asking himself “What Would Obama Do?”  Like the President, he has officially left a high paying job and promising future for not only public service but a major pay cut.  That’s why, here at the Daily Obama, we believe he’s made the biggest pimp move of the week.

To certify how official his move is, he didn’t just have himself written out of the FOX sitcom House, he had his character killed off.  That means he won’t even have the temptation of returning.  Instead, he’ll take on the position as an associate director in the White House’s Office of Public Liaison & Intergovernmental Affairs.

The 31-year-old actor says that he has always been interested in politics and that “the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor.”  I guess he heard the President’s speech about “making a difference.”

Well, welcome to the “regular” work world Mr. Penn!

What do you think?  Would you leave a big paying job to be a servant of the people?  Tell us here.

PRES. OBAMA DETOURS TO IRAQ

Always be on your best behavior because you never know when the President will make a special appearance. That’s the lesson the press and world learned when, after leaving Turkey and closing out an eight-day world tour; President Obama made an unscheduled trip to Iraq.

The President spoke before US troops, thanking them for their service and reminding them that the next 18 months would be a difficult but necessary transition.  Obama also emphasized the work that he’s been doing to ensure that veterans are well taken care of upon their return home.
The crowd of soldiers cheered and each reached to shake hands with the President.  It seems that the President is aware that sometimes it’s the little things in life that keep people going.

The detour to Iraq is his first as President, but Obama has been switching the game up since he took office.  It seems to be a good recipe to keep people fresh and alert—you never know when the boss will stroll through.

What do you think about the Presidents detour?  Tell us here.Video courtesty of cnn.com

PRES. OBAMA ADDRESSES MUSLIM WORLD

“…let me say this as clearly as I can — the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam.” –Pres. Obama during his address to the Turkish Parliament.

In case you missed President Obama’s Turkish Parliament address—plain and simple, he’s not backing down from his stance on American-Islam issues. Instead, he wants to start the conversation—how to agree to disagree without waging war.

Though this isn’t the Presidents first shout out to the Muslim world (think back to his historic inaugural address), his directness with the matter is still very surprising and a bit uncomfortable for many.  Nothing new, he has long been targeted as an undercover Muslim and each time he addresses the American-Islam issue it’s as if people are anticipating his exit from the religion closet at any moment.

It seems like another excuse to ignore the larger issue at hand—we need to find a resolution. Since the 9/11 attacks and our war on terrorism, the tension between America and the Muslim world has been a sensitive matter. The President’s attempt to clean-up the mess is a necessity and comes at a fairly good time.

Who better to start the process than a man named Barack Hussein Obama whom Muslims may have a little more respect and patience with.

What do you think?  Is it time to find a peaceful resolution with Islam?  Tell us here.
