UPDATE: New York Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allen has responded to Rev. Al Sharpton’s criticism of the controversial political cartoon with the following statement: “The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”
By now, you’ve probably had 15 friends forward this comic strip to you but here at the Daily Obama we just HAD to get your opinion.
In today’s New York Post, you can see a new comic strip by Sean Delonas which shows two cops talking after shooting a monkey. Now, on first glance, this seems to be nothing more than a crude reference to the recent news about a pet chimp that mauled its owner and was later shot to death by the police.
Fine, we get it.
But it’s the what the cartoon cop says that has thrown us for a loop.
“They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”
Uh, excuse us?
Is that a monkey reference to President Obama, the nation’s first African American President? Let’s restate that — is that a MURDERED monkey reference to President Obama?
It wouldn’t be the first time Black folks, or Barack Obama has been compared to a monkey — you remember the Curious George debacle last year? But this smacks of something more dangerous.
Seems Rev. Al Sharpton agrees.
In a Huffingtonpost article about the comic, Sharpton is quoted as saying “The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this . . . ”
Question: Do you find this comic strip offensive or do you think folks are being too sensitive?
