So I was wondering why in my job editing medical reports, I am seeing a resurgence of "cabbage" in place of CABG, a common medical procedure. Our voice recognition software has been programmed to recognize this and other common abbreviations/acronyms physicans use. But for some reason, these and other silly errors have become more and more common. Why the regression? Why am I being paid less money to do more work? Answer: The company contracts with "International Labor Partners". Translation: Third-world transcriptionists working at a fraction of my price. But because ILP's have only a basic command of the English language and limited medical terminology expertise, I am now being required to correct the reports they mutilate. As an experienced MT I know a potassium level of 402 (instead of 4.2) would leave a person as lifeless as my paychecks. And nitroglycerin paste is measured in inches, not units. There are also potentially life-threatening errors like a diabetic being prescribed Zebeta (a beta blocker) instead of DiaBeta. Time is money for me, so having to correct these mistakes claws away at my pay. And of course my morale. Contrary to what the President said in answer to a question about offshoring in his on-line town hall, I want my job. Even though it has been persistently devalued by avaricious CEO's willing to whore out medical safety and national security for profit. Along with our jobs, our sensitive medical and personal data (including birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers) are being sent to places like India, the Phillipines, Barbados, and even the tumultuous Pakistan, where HIPAA cannot not be enforced to protect this information, to investigate its theft, or to prosecute thieves. So I applaud President Obama's efforts to rebuild the American workforce. I just hope the people with the real power to do this cooperate. Peace!
