PRES. OBAMA & IRAQ

Party on, Obama says to Iraqis

U.S. troops withdrew from major Iraqi cities Tuesday, nearly seven years after the Iraq war started.  And the Iraqis partied: impromptu street celebrations, parades, fireworks, and a national holiday marked the occasion.

President Obama was all for the partying going on in Iraq. “The Iraqi people are rightly treating this day as a cause for celebration,” he said in remarks made at a community solutions event at The White House. “This is an important step forward, as a sovereign and united Iraq continues to take control of its own destiny.”

Not one to get carried away, however, the President warned that “there will be difficult days ahead.” He noted the deadly car bombing in Iraq that had taken place that very same day and the expectation that some violence in the country will continue.

Nonetheless, the President believes in Iraq’s ability to overcome forces working to thwart the country’s success as a unified, sovereign nation. “I am confident that those forces will fail,” he said.  “The future belongs to those who build, not those who destroy.”
