THE BIG STORY: HAMPTON CROWNS FIRST NON-BLACK QUEEN
Hampton University has made national headlines as news spread that the campus has crowned its first non-African American homecoming queen. Newly-crowned HU senior and Hawaii native Nikole Churchill says she represents the multicultural change that has not only happened at Hampton, but across the world. Churchill has taken the controversy all the way to the White House as she penned a letter to President Obama asking for his support.
Churchill wrote :
“I am hoping that perhaps you would be able to make an appearance to my campus, Hampton University, so that my fellow Hamptonians can stop focusing so much on the color of my skin and doubting my abilities to represent, but rather be proud of the changes our nation is making towards accepting diversity. People are even nicknaming me, “lil Obama” because of various reasons. This is truly an honor as well!”
While Churchill feels the only issue is her race, other students have complained that Churchill attends the university via satellite and doesn’t have a campus presence.

I agree with the students who argued that the issue was her presence on campus. I voted for campus queens based on several factors, one of them being involvement in campus activities and work in the community. It is not about just being pretty. I am sure that the other contestants who are well-known on campus because they are involved in campus life can’t be happy about it. I see she made it to campus for the ceremony!
Why is it okay for African Americans to exclude other races but it is not okay for other races to exclude African Americans? Being serious here, that seems like a form of racism to me.
Having a contest exclusive to Afican Americans is the same as seeing a sign that says, “whites only” This is the 21st century, so people should wake up…geesh.
I don’t approve of this at all. What statement are they trying to make?.. That being pedigree isn’t beautiful anymore, you have to be cultural diverse to say “black is beautiful”. I will not be giving anymore of my dollars to support HBCU.

I’m not going to re-write history on this blogg. I just wanted to enlighten somethings on those of us who don’t know why? “it should be a issue”. This is also an insult to President Barak and Michelle Obama. The devil will try all kinds of schems and scams to trick you up.
My answer to this topic is “Yes” non-African Americans should be EXCLUDED to being crowned Queen at the HISTORY OF BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
Apparently the contest wasn’t exclusive of other races. The young woman entered and won. But Hampton is an historically black university with a predominantly African-American student population. That other races are excluded from most its activities is simply the way it’s going to turn out, most of the time. Other races are welcomed to attend any HBCU. That more of them don’t apply is not the schools’ fault.
It’s a valid point that the person chosen to represent the student body should have been more visible on campus, and participated in school activities. A connection to the constituency is expected for any elected position.

If she was known to make her physical appearance on the campus and was socially involved with her Hamptonians I wouldn’t dissapprove of her winning.
This is unfair to the African American who has worked to win the honor and raised issues on “diversity”.
Like the Movie “Soul Man”, a rich white boy who disguised himself to be black, robs a struggling single black mother of her chances of receiving a scholarship to attend Harvard Law School.

I feel you, in the valid point you are trying to make. That it was robbery to take from someone who deserved the honor and give to a non-African American,non participant student an underserving crown as Queen at a predominately Black university.
This was done only, because President Obama was giving the “Noble Peace Prize” and some white Americans and African Americans felt it wasn’t an award he deserve. Black people turning against themselves again to only make white folks satisfied.
I got news for all the African Americans in this country that feels this strategy of cover ups and lies works than think again. Dishonesty never gets anything done right. Just have to make up more repeated lies. A viscious cycle of doing things, and innocent people being victimized by it all.

Thanks so much for your follow-up! I understand the points that you’re making. I totally get how the “queen” should be active on campus. I wouldn’t fault her for not living on campus – considering the cost, etc. but even if you don’t LIVE on campus, you can still be ACTIVE on campus.
I also felt that her request to Obama was disingenuous and cynical. And, most likely ignored by the White House!

what if this was an all white school and the winner was black everyone would be saying good for her. the only differance would be if white said some of the things said in this post we would be called a racest. but that would never happen in todays time and age….. an all white college now thats funny….
Chris, since you seem to share the sentiment of many whites who resent that African-Americans even have HBCUs, why don’t you encourage your children to attend them so that they can be among the few who integrate them. See, most of the non-blacks who matriculate at HBCUs do so only because they received scholarships from those schools. I don’t blame anyone for going to the institution from which they received a scholarship, but they likely wouldn’t have chosen an HBCU had there not been a financial advantage. The reason HBCUs remain primarily segregated is because most other races choose not to attend them. The claim is that the schools are not “selective” enough in their admission policies. But the concern should be how well the graduates are prepared to enter the workforce. HBCUs usually have excellent faculties that often include a few professors who are nationally and world renown in their disciplines. Many blacks who attend HBCUs do very well in life. Both my daughters, a niece and a nephew are graduates of HBCUs, and it makes me very proud that although blacks don’t own any of the hospitals, banks, or grocery store chains we patronize, at least we have institutions for educating our young. We shouldn’t take them for granted.

If the students voted for her, I don’t have a problem with their selection. The issue regarding HBCUs being exclusively African-American can be resolved by other races applying for admission.

What, you’re right. You didn’t actually “say” that. I overread between the lines because you appeared to be speaking in the vein of people who’ve expressed resentment regarding colleges/universities, magazines, fashion shows, cable networks that are geared primarily toward black interests.

For me, it would really depend upon the circumstances. For example, if it were a matter of survival such as a need for hospital care, I want to be able to go wherever I can receive the best care. If any school was the only that offered a particular field of study that I need to master, then I want the option to go there. And I want to feel comfortable shopping at a location that offers the best of any product I need to buy.
On the other hand, there are times when people should be allowed to socialize as they choose. Sometimes, people want to spend time around those with whom they have most in common, without others trying to hone in. This applies to the sexes too. Everyone deserves that kind of freedom on occasion, and those wishes should be mutually respected.
I wouldn’t want to join private clubs or participate in social functions where I felt unwelcomed. As my mom would have said, if someone doesn’t want you at their party, then throw your own.

As well you should and the same with my kids. i just hope that if my kids chose to go to a HBCU school that the feel welcome by the majorty the student body and is allowed to participat in all school activities.
