JANET JACKSON: ‘I BLAME MICHALE’S DOCTOR’

THE FACTS
Excerpts from Janet Jackson’s interview with ABC News have been released.
THE SPIN
While the rest of the Jacksons dance around the question, Janet flat out says she blames Dr. Conrad Murray for the death of Michael Jackson.
In tonight’s interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, Damita Jo says this about Dr. Murray: “He was the one that was administering. I think he is responsible.”
And she also recalls how she found out about her brother Michael dying:
“I was at my house in New York. You know, another day. Another morning. And I get a call…[my assistant] said, ‘Your brother’s been taken to the hospital. It’s on CNN right now.’ I called everyone…I spoke to Mother. I spoke to Tito. I spoke to my nephew Austin. I spoke to my sister La Toya.
I told them to call me when they got to the hospital. And I remember thinking, nobody’s calling me back, so I tried calling again, and that’s how I found out that he was no longer.”
It didn’t ring true to me. It felt like a dream. It’s still so difficult for me to believe.”
In addition to thoughts on Michael’s death, Janet was asked about a longstanding rumor about her father, Joe.
When asked if he was indeed abusive, the youngest Jackson answered:
“You have to keep in mind that I’m the baby. I think it’s old-school. And that may extrapolate into, ah, being a little abusive. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

yes he was and i think that he did not have to scare his kids like that but after at least he was in their lives unlike some dead beat daddies today
I think Joe was abusive…..BY TODAY’S STANDARDS! In those days, that was considered good parenting but Joe (rumor has it) went beyond what was acceptable even for that era!
We’ll never know the whole truth but I see Janet’s point.
Joe Jackson went beyond corporal punishment. But, that kind of punishment or abuse was common at that time in society, among blacks and whites. I was talking to a white lady in her 80’s a few weeks ago. She was badmouthing parents of this generation because they don’t whip their kids.
That is true K. Even my own parents would be considered criminal today. Still, that 80 year old woman isn’t far wrong. I think an ass-whippin’ here and there doesn’t hurt a bit. Its when you make it your own solution for correcting bad behavior is when you have a problem!
A lot of parents made that their only solution. I’ve seen that “hitting the kid where it hurts” (grounding or something similiar) or even some humiliation is just as effective as an ass-whippin’ would be.
In that era, Joe would’ve been seen as a good parent but from what I understand, he went too far even by those loose standards in those days.
People have to remember the day and age that Joseph brought up his children and the fact that he was the sole provider for not one or two but five young men. I am a woman who was raised in the 70’s and I know everybody in my neighborhood experienced the same thing by their parents and sometimes neighbors in my neighborhood. I can remember a many days going to get my switch from across the street. My mother did what she thought was the right thing..it’s was actually a learned behavior that quite frankly derived from the slave master in order to put a person in place. (Yall remember Toby and Miss Celie “Beat Her”. I love my mother too and I would be appauled if someone even suggested she was abusive. Again, it was a learned behavior I think. It is also funny that the other boys don’t show hostility or express anger with Joseph, personally I think Michael was just more sensitive than the others.
I dont know, there is a level of discipline that can be applied to correct a child but from what it sounds like Joe was abusive, I also grew up in the 70s and I did not get hit or a whippin for every thing I did, I got punishment as well, not all parents used the whippin thing all the time to discipline there kids, in fact it doesnt work after a while so you gotta mix it up and take things away etc… I think Janet was just being the classy woman that she is and did not want to put her father out there like that
Why are we still discussing this? It really shouldn’t matter anymore. All the Jackson children are now adults and really don’t need Joe Jackson guidance anymore.
No matter what we have to say about Joe Jacksons abusiveness his children are still going to have love for their father. I find it abusive for the media to continue to discuss this mans past. It’s not only hurting Joe Jackson it also effects his children and grand children. Janet should not discuss anything more about her family openly to the public so they can have more to run with.
THERE THE STUPID karen MONSTER GOES AGAIN,TRYING TO TELL,NOW JANET JACKSON WHAT TO DO.MONSTER karen IS STONE CRAZY.JANET DON’T READ ANYTHING THIS STUPID MONSTER karen BABLES ABOUT JANET.BESIDES MONSTER karen YOU NEED NEED TO BE A MAN AND GIVE YOUR MONSTER BOYFRIEND tyrone HIS WELFARE CHECK THAT YOU MONSTER karen OWES HIM,PUNK karen.
IT’S YOU NEED TO BE A MAN ABOUT GIVING YOUR WELFARE CHECK TO YOUR MONSTER BOYFRIEND tyrone,MONSTER karen C.
I don’t want to be reminded anymore about the death of Micheal Jackson. Nothing they can do to bring him back. Dr Conrad Murray and all the other butcher doctors going to get whats coming to them.
That’s a valid point Ervin made: by today’s standards? Yes. But if you ask people in their 40s and 50s what was the prototype for black fathers during their youth, they probably knew more who were like Joe Jackson than Cliff Huxtable. Right or wrong, that’s the way it was done in those days.
Personally, I believe in applying a little heat to the behind occasionally, especially when children need to be protected from themselves. But all discipline has to be tempered with sound judgment and balance. I’ve lived long enough to see the fallout for harshly penalizing children for every infraction, and the other extreme, being overly permissive with them. Neither result is good.

I thought the interview went really well. It seem like JD help lift her self esteem alot. She seem to still love him.
This is the first time I watched the video above. Good interview.
I wonder if Joe has ever regretted not allowing his children to call him ‘daddy’. To a child, it must have felt like a rebuff and clearly she’s still hurt by it.
I recorded it the night it aired but just watched it this morning. I agree with littlebit, I think she still loves JD. Granted, he ain’t the most handsome looking brotha but you know, it ain’t always about looks and I might also add he’s one of the few that stood behind Janet after that whole Super-Bowl fiasco in 2004 so he gets much respect from me for doing that when everyone else was hounding her!
I thought the interview was good. I do find it strange that Joe didn’t want them to call him “daddy.” That was MANDATORY in my house.

I know this isn’t going to be popular, but without those people who are hard, tough and demanding, nothing in the world would ever get done. As difficult and insufferable as they can be, the taskmasters force people to rise to new levels. We may prefer the company of easy-going people people because they make us feel comfortable. But ‘easy’ doesn’t refine. A soft-spoken tone may be soothing, but it doesn’t convey a sense of urgency.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the story of how the silversmith must put silver through fire to bring forth its best qualities. Sometimes, that’s true with people. I was reminded of that through a story about Wilma Stephenson, that aired on CBS’ ‘Sunday Morning’, today. A clip of that is not yet available, but here’s another:
http://www.schooltube.com/video/48268/Wilma-Stephenson-of-Pressure-Cooker-on-Value-of-Education
The ‘Sunday Morning’ story stated that to date, her students have received over $600,000 in scholarships. So, although some people might initially be turned off because she comes across as a drill sargeant, she’s doing something that’s working.
As much as we enjoy hating Joe Jackson, look how the world benefitted from his children who learned to always put forth their best.

Rance,
I agree with what you are saying about needing to go through the fire to gain strength and also about old school discipline versus new school. However, in the specific case of Joe Jackson, I have to veer. IMO, he crossed the line from discipline and appropriate punishments to verbal, physical and emotional abuse. I definitely believe spanking as punishment, but beating with a switch or cord is never okay, not in 2009, nor in 1969. I believe, based on the consistent accounts by his children and wife, that he went overboard. Discipline teaches responsibility and respect, punishment let’s you know that there’s a consequence for your actions, but abuse makes you, among other things, fearful and/or hateful.
Can I just say how odd it feels to come down on the other side of an argument with you! LOL
AP
CHAZ,
You consistently refer to yourself as Mexican. I was wondering if you live in the States or if you live in Mexico. Just curious.
Also, when you type in ALL CAPS it is the equivalent of YELLING. I’m wondering if SCREAMING in your posts is your intent. If SCREAMING at people is not your intent, please unlock the CAPS LOCK button. If SCREAMING is, in fact, your intent, carry on.

AP,
I agree that Joe Jackson went too far, and at some point, he stopped considering his children and became consumed with himself. But, it always bothers me when opinion is so heavily slanted to one side, because when that happens, it means that no one is considering extenuating circumstances or even the full picture. He was definitely wrong. We know that now because we saw how things played out. But I think it’s important to reflect upon how he got there. In those days, people didn’t have the resources to handle, or even recognize stress as they do now. Shouldering the responsibilities of being the sole provider for a family of eleven, without an education, the man was probably like a walking volcano. All of that tension building is going to go somewhere. Unfortunately, those closest to him caught it. I’m not suggesting that his circumstances should excuse his actions, just explain them.
Actually, AP, there was one other issue where you and I disagreed: the Chrihanna debacle. I’ve never been convinced that this young man spent their time together beating her up. I have nothing to go on but a gut feeling, but I just don’t believe it. In most disagreements, it’s very rare that one person is completely innocent while the other is completely to blame. That’s why I found it disturbing that so many people were ready to pounce on him with a mob-like mentality, yet dismiss claims that she was often the aggressor. I feel that sometimes dissenting opinions are needed just to create some equilibrium.
No, I don’t mind respectful disagreement. Why someone would come to web site and read the opinions of others, then get angry and want to personally attack someone for thinking differently, is beyond me. They’re better off communicating only with mirrors or writing in a private journal.
Joe Jackson will not receive Father of the Year Award, but, I think he saw talent in his children and used questionable methods to enforce control and respect. Parents are not perfect,
yet, he did have some positive influence over them. He and Katherine Jackson had nine children together. How often do we hear about them in jail or rehab?
