JANET JACKSON ISN’T AFRAID OF RIHANNA & LADY GAGA

THE FACTS
Janet Jackson spoke on some of her younger contemporary artist in her cover story with Wonderland.

THE SPIN
Like the rest of us, Janet Jackson has noticed the rise of Lady GaGa and Rihanna.

On comparisons to Rihanna, Janet said: “Everything is cyclical. They come back around at some point.”

If Rihanna can be compared to Janet Jackson than a stale potato chip is my twin brother.

On the two stars collectively Janet said it’s great to “express yourself and be true to you,” but quipped that she wonders how long they’re going to be able to keep topping themselves.

She told Wonderland:

“I enjoy it because it’s something kind of different. It’s something new to look at. It’s going to be hard [for her] to keep up with that, but who knows?”

For the better part of ten years I can’t say Janet’s look has altered all that much. I’m a huge fan, but if we’re being honest not much has changed in terms of her look and the subject matter she sings about.

That may finally change, though, as she explained that fans might be treated to some of that classic Janet reinvention:

“I can tell there’s a change going on in me. Something good. A lot has happened in my life this year, a lot of changes; I think I’m kind of headed in a different direction for sure, and it’ll show itself to me. As far as keeping up, I don’t look at it like that.

It’s really about being who you are and doing what you want to do. I think when you try to keep up with something, it’s not a good thing. You have to express yourself and be the true you.”

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE IS SORRY FOR NOT SUPPORTING JANET

THE FACTS
Justin Timberlake spoke on not supporting Janet Jackson enough during the Superbowl controversy in a recent interview.

THE SPIN
In too little, too late, you still ain’t ish for what you did news, Justin Timberlake has decided to publicly regret his actions back during the whole Nipplegate controversy that erupted after the “wardrobe malfunction” during he and Janet Jackson’s performance at the 2004 Super Bowl.

When asked about his biggest regret this decade, Justin told Entertainment Weekly:

“I wish I had supported Janet more (during the 2004 wardrobe malfunction Super Bowl controversy). I’m not sorry I apologized, but I wish I had been there more for Janet.”

How fitting he would wait five years to say this. Even better is that he says it at a time when the spotlight really isn’t on him and chances are not as many people will ever hear about this “regret.”

I guess late is better than never at all, but Janet Jackson’s career took a huge hit for that stunt (and yes, it was a stunt) but Justin got off easy for basically ducking and dodging any responsibility for his actions.  It would have been nice to have a united front. Justin went on to become an even bigger star while Janet’s career has taken a hit ever since.

Is a five year apology too late or should bygones be bygones?

JANET JACKSON DISCUSSES BABY RUMORS

THE FACTS
Janet Jackson discussed longstanding baby rumors with Giant magazine.

THE SPIN
I adore Janet Jackson, but is it me or are all of her interviews the same?

As in she broke out when she dropped “Control,” she’s very private, she’s self-conscious about her weight, and she can’t wait to drop a new album.

Same thing happened in her Giant interview, although I will say she went a bit more in depth about that rumor that she had a baby and sent her off to live with Rebe twenty-something years ago.

Here’s what she told Giant about James Debarge even starting to buy into the hype:

On her former brother-in-law spreading rumors that she had a secret daughter with James DeBarge:

“I think he wanted to get attention, and it upsets me people seem to want me to have a baby I’ve never told anyone about. But I think James’ mother believes there’s a baby as well. He and I have actually talked about it. He said to me that his mother actually mentioned it to him so much, he had to ask me about it! Like, ‘You wouldn’t do that, would you?’ And I had to tell him, ‘If I’d had a baby, you would know.’ I would never keep a child from its father.

On starting a family with Jermaine Dupri:

“Jermaine made me feel less self-conscious about my body, my butt. I’ve never had anyone who looks at me and just loves me. He’s the only one I’ve ever even thought about having kids with. People offered to ‘help me out’ after my divorce [laughs], but now I would really love to experience motherhood.”

On her rumored blacklisting by MTV and VH1:

“If they want to come along and join the party, they can. If not, so be it.”

Gon’ Damita, let them know.
