WHERE’S D’ANGELO?

THE FACTS
Newsweek reports on the status of D’Angelo’s rumored comeback project.

THE SPIN
Late last year, Team D’Angelo got my optimism levels at an all-time high because they swore D’Angelo was coming out with a new album this year that he would tour for this summer.

It seemed like everyone from his personal trainer to his third grade teacher were coming out to speak highly of Michael Archer and hype this album up.

We got a title for the project: James River.

We got a list of collaborators: Prince, Raphael Saadiq, Cee-Lo, and John Mayer.

After a while, though, us D’Angelo stans noticed something: We didn’t get a thing from the man himself.

As fate would have it, there’s a reason behind that: We’re not getting an album anytime soon.

Newsweek dug a little deeper into the whereabouts of this rumored comeback album and here’s what they found:

“Here is the most recent update: according to Lindsay Guion, D’Angelo’s manager, no album will be released this summer. No collaborators have been confirmed. The artist is living in Richmond. He’s recording there and in New York City, and he will deliver the tracks to his record company by September. Guion says they have just signed a contract for a U.S. tour that will begin around the holidays. So, the bottom line seems to be that nobody’s going to hear anything from D’Angelo at least well into the fall. That includes NEWSWEEK. After repeated requests for an interview, D’Angelo’s rep finally offered to pass on a list of questions by e-mail with assurances that D’Angelo would actually provide the answers. After a day, however, his management backtracked to say the singer was unavailable until the album was finished.”

Stop playing with me, folks. I don’t want to hear anything about a new album until it’s done, packaged, and ready to ship to stores.

Other than that, leave me be and let me continue to sing “When We Get By” off key. That’s probably as close to a D’Angelo concert as I’m gonna get.

MICHAEL AND PRINCE DUET?

THE FACTS
Janet Charlston’s Hollywood reports that Michael Jackson plans to have surprise duets in store for his upcoming tour stint in the U.K.

THE SPIN
Before you get too excited, it’s not the Prince you’re expecting. Michael Jackson won’t be singing on stage with a short, multi-talented musician into purple and stilettos. Instead he may be singing with a short, younger White kid we know nothing about…only that he’s named Prince Michael Jackson.

Wait, I’m supposed to call him Michael’s son, right? Yeah, it’s his child, but until I have Maury confirm it for me I’m not expecting any of that Jackson talent to be in his genetic makeup.

I’d rather see Michael perform with Janet or even watch him runaway from LaToya than see him perform with this “kid.”

D’ANGELO’S CAMP BACKTRACKS

THE FACTS
A rep for D’Angelo has released a statement denying much of the news released in a recent press release on the singer’s forthcoming album.

THE SPIN
I get the feeling they’re trying to play us again. Only a year or so ago D’Angelo was walking around looking like the long lost twin of O.D.B, the fat years and dodging both bill collectors and law enforcement. Then came that Spin article in which several of his old musicians and friends claimed the secluded R&B star couldn’t handle the newfound attention his body was getting from audiences. Should have known when his camp kept releasing all of these press statements about how well he was doing so quickly was suspect.

You know that announced Prince collab for the D’Angelo album called “James River.” Yeah, both aren’t confirmed. They just wanted to drum up hype and string us along.

In a statement issued through Billboard, D’Angelo’s manager, Lindsay Guion says, “We have spoken to Prince, Mark Ronson and John Mayer’s camps, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.”

According to Guion, Cee-Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Q-Tip and Roy Hargrove are still on tap for D’Angelo’s J Records release.

Don’t say anything else until you know something is confirmed. I’ve been waiting for D’Angelo to come back for like nine years now.
